Married Twice Smith & Smith

I don't think your lot would be able to get divorced and remarried in such a short space of time, especially in those days! Perhaps some legal technicality came to light in 1923 which is why they remarried. Maybe if you can find that the marriages are both the same couple, the local register office might have some ideas about why. nell

I just read read a posting on another board where someone said how her parents married, divorced and then, a few years later, re-married. So that's another possibility !

Thanks Christine, I am having trouble with this side of the family (on John H Smith) because... well it's John Smith!!! I want to be sure what certificate to get so I dont get the wrong one.

Have you seen both certificates? It is possible with such names that there could be two different couples with the same name combination - unlikely, perhaps, but more possible than for other names. With sight of the certs, you could check fathers' names & occupations as well as bride & groom names, ages, occupations, addresses. If they were Roman Catholic, maybe there was some problem with the recording the first marriage so they were required to go through the ceremony again. (I've heard tell of a couple who married far more than twice, because of a series of acccidents with the recording or acceptability of the ceremonies!) Christine

I have My G Grandparents marrying Twice, Once in 1919 and then again in 1923 at the same place ( John H Smith and Elizabeth Smith, Everton, St. Benedict Liverpool) Why is this?
