Fresh pair of eyes on 1871 census needed

Hi everyone - Please could someone have a look at an 1871 census entry on Ancestry for me. It is for Thomas Gaunt living in Crook County Durham aged 42. I don't agree with their transcription of "Ormesby" Yorkshire for his place of birth (I don't actually think it exists!!!). I know what I originally thought it said, but am having second thoughts. A second opinion would be much appreciated.

Can't seem to find him - is the spelling and age you've given exactly as Ancestry have transcribed him?

Is Middlesborough in Yorkshire, or was it in Yorkshire in 1871?

I originally thought it said Armley (but without the "e") but am not too sure about the first letter. It doesn't look like the A of Alston Moor a couple of lines below!!! Boy am I having trouble with this family. His son Matthew has three different places of birth on 3 censuses, and not anywhere near each other. Unfortunately Thomas died before 1881. I can't find birth details for Thomas senior, Matthew or Margaret, or Margaret and Thomas's marriage!!!

Middlesbrough is and was Yorkshire... till they decided to call it Cleveland, then Teesside, then Cleveland again... http://www.multimap*com/map/browse.cgi?GridE=-1.1895&Grid N=54.5487&client=public&lon=-1.1895&lat=54.5487&place= Ormesby,Middlesbrough&db=freegaz&local=&type=&start=&limit=&overviewmap=& scale=100000&lang=&db=freegaz (remove * and spaces)

There are two Sherburn(e)s in Yorkshire - one in the North and one near Selby. Matthew says on the 1891 and 1901 censuses that his birth place is Bradford. In 1881 it is on as Walton. The mind boggles!

Thanks for all your suggestions folks - I think I need to go back to the drawing board on this one. I don't think I like this family very much. I am sure they had a dark and shady secret that I am not meant to reveal!!
