My Gt Grandmother, Elizabeth Robinson, is listed on the UK Census (Durham) as being born in Scotland. She was born abt 1851, her fathers name is James Robinson, her wedding was witnessed by Alexander Robinson, but brother or uncle I have no idea. From census data her father (also Scotland) would have been born around 1820. From the LDS site I have the following... James Robinson bn 12 March 1820, Old Machar, Aberdeen, to William Robinson/Isobel Mackay. James ROBSON married Nicolis Elspet Glennie, 11th June 1849, Old Machar, Aberdeen. They had a daughter Nicolas Elizabeth Robson bn 25 Mar 1850. No mention of a son. I can't find these people on Scotlands People so I don't know if I'm clutching at straws here because I can make the dates fit! I have also found a death certificate for James Robinson of Scotland in 1897 (aged 77 at death in Durham). I'm stuck with this research, any info or advice greatly received. I have also never heard of Nicolas (and variations) used as a female name before. Anyone ever come across this? Thanks, Brenda

Hi Racing Girl, Civil registration only started in Scotland in 1855, so before that you will have to rely on the Old Parochial Registers, and finding aids for these such as the IGI. It might be worth contacting the local Family History Society in Aberdeen to see if they have an index for the 1851 or 1861 census - this should show the name commonly used by the family, and if they're still there in 1861, it might turn up a few additional names that fall within the civil registations. The website for Aberdeen and North-East Scotland FHS is www(.)anefhs(.)org(.)uk. Good luck!
