Found this on IGI. Bridget, In 1881 he is listed as being born c1846 not 1849. In 1871 he is in Southwark in 14 Collingwood St born c1844. Name Age in 1871 Birthplace Relationship Civil Parish County/Island View Image Emily Cooper 26 Suffolk, England Boarder Christchurch London Glass Maker. There is this one in the 1851 census for Birmingham but the father's job doesn't match up. Thanks very much Nell. I know that Emma susan was born in londons pudding lane. but I did not know I could get mothers maiden name from birth cert. Thanks again for your help

I see from the 1881 census that his daughter Emma was aged 9. If her birthday was before the census was taken, she would be born 1872, if after then she would be born 1871 and coming up to her 10th birthday in 1881. You could look for her birth in the GRO indexes and then send off for a likely one (she would be born maybe in London), using her father Richard and his occupation as well as mother Emma as checks to ensure it is the right one. Then you can get mother Emma's maiden name which will enable you to find Richard and Emma's marriage cert. This will give you Richard's father's name and you can use this as a check in ensuring you get the right birth cert for Richard. nell

I'm trying to trace a Richard Cooper. yes I know it's a really common name. I know he was born in Birmingham around 1849 and moved to London. He was a Glassblower and I have found him on 1881 cen but can't find him any earlier where do I look next?
