Hi all,l have a bit of a mystery lm trying to solve. My G/Grandfathers brother Fred, in 1891 he is in the Louth workhouse with Ernest and other members of there family,Fred is aged 7 given place of birth is Hull Yorkshire. I did a search of his birth, and it came up with three Fred/Frederick Archers born Hull area,in or around 1883,but on the 1891 census of Hull two are still living in Hull area the other died aged 2. So how can one person be living in two places at the same time ?,ie Louth workhouse and Hull Yorkshire. Could somebody please please explain to me as l cant fathom out what to do next. Have a Safe Pleasent Day WIZZ

Hi Wizz As you probably know people often gave names they were known by in the census rather than the one they were christened with. Perhaps somebody who was christened John Archers is known as Fred Archers on the cnesus thus making it look as though there was one extra Fred. Hope this makes sense Jeanette x

If you did your search on FreeBMD, remember that this isn't complete yet - maybe there is another Fred Archer who's not transcribed yet? Or maybe one was actually registered in a surrounding district, not in Hull itself? Birthplaces are not always accurate on censuses anyway. Another possibility would be that one of the Fred's had changed his surname to Archer after his registration (e.g. if his mother had remarried).

There are two possibles on the 1901 census - are either of these yours? Regards Mary

Did you check the Sculcoates registration district, it covers quite a large part of what is (and was) considered to be Hull? Anne

http://www.yorkshirebmd.org.uk has a sprinkling of Freds born in the Hull area (the births for which seem to have been fully transcribed on that site) around that time: Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Reference Yorkshire Birth indexes for the years: 1882 ARCHER Frederick Sutton Hull SUT/32/356 Yorkshire Birth indexes for the years: 1883 ARCHER Frederick Drypool Hull DRY/35/37 Yorkshire Birth indexes for the years: 1884 ARCHER Fred M Myton Hull MYT/145/46 ARCHER Freddy Hessle Hull HES/16/342 Perhaps whichever of these isn't one of the three you found is the one you want?
