Have you looked for Gealous (or variant) entries? Or Sealous/Tealous? I imagine that some of the possible mistranscriptions will not necessarily be thrown up by a soundex search. Good luck B

I offered to help a friend with his research as he was stuck... after all the name he is researching is JEALOUS and I thought that'd be a doddle!! His great grandfather was Joseph JEALOUS and he was born in 1852 in the Charlton/Woolwich area. He was a bricklayer and he married Sarah RYDER in Shoreditch in 1877. On Joseph and Sarah's marriage certificate, Joseph's father is also named as Joseph JEALOUS - but we know nothing more about him. We assume that he came from Kent (but this may be a red herring). I've checked the 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901 and cannot find any Joseph JEALOUS' born pior to 1852... I've also checked the BR VRI without success. There are quite a few Jealous' from the Lincolnshire area. I'm pretty sure that 'our' family must have originated from there, but have yet to find a link. This Joseph JEALOUS, who would have been born c. 1832, is the key. I suppose it's quite possible that he died prior to 1871 (although he is not recorded as deceased on Joseph and Sarah's marriage certificate and I haven't yet found his registered death). Does anyone have any other ideas... or please could someone check out the 1851/1861 censuses? Thanks a lot!
