I wonder if anyone can help. I have found that my Gt. Gt. Grandfather was buried in St. Matthews Church, Highfield, Wigan on 23/6/1934, with last known address as 73 Billinge Road, Pemberton/Wigan. Unfortunately, that is all that I know about him. His name is John Smith (another unfortunate fact), but he had at least 1 daughter Alice who was my Gt. Grandmother. I would be grateful if anyone could point me in the right direction as all other ways have failed so far. Thanks Andrea

How old was he when he died? What was the wifes name.

Andrea If you get Alice's birth cert it should have her mother's maiden name on it. Hopefully it will be something less popular than Smith and you can then find your gt gt grandparent's marriage. It may have his age and will definitely have his father's name, so you should be able to find his birth from there, or at least find him or his father on the census. nell

Thanks for all your replies. I believe he was approx. 70 when he died. However, Alice got married twice approx 1909 to James Fairhurst and then in 1913 to William Thomas Fairhurst (brothers). I have the second marriage certificate and on it there is no Father mentioned and she is down as Alice Fairhurst, Spinster. I do have Alice's death cert and she died in 1954 at the age of 65. The address for her was 19 Marsden Street, Pemberton, Wigan. I believe that John Smith was also born in the Wigan area. Thanks for your help. Andrea

Thanks for the search, but Alice was born in 1889, so she was only 1 or 2 at the 1891 census. Andrea

I meant Alice's birth cert would have John Smith's wife's maiden name on it, so you could find his marriage cert, which would give his father's name and also hopefully his age. nell
