Thanks Jeanette, I thought that was probably more likely, but although I know you can be an AB in the Royal Navy, I wasn,t sure if the same applied to th Merchant Navy. |

Susan I think it would be more likely to be Merchant Navy. Hull was a big fishing port in the past. When my Grandad joined the Roylal Navy he had to go elsewhere to sign up Jeanette x |

The 1881 census lists my husband's grandfather's occupation as Mariner AB (presumably able seaman). He was living in Hull. I am now wondering which is more likely...Royal Navy or Merchant Navy? Do you have AB's in both services? |
