When you say family, you mean ancestors? If so, then ancestry is the best and it costs about £70 a year. You can try it out for a 2 week trial free. I believe you can pay by cheque.

Doreen If it more recent family then it best to look on 1837(.)com this is the indexing which is in London 1837- present day for Birth marriage and deaths. This costs 1 credit to view a page, it is in alpherbetical order and 4 quarters per year or each of B M or D. Free to join but to view the pages you will have to buy credits £5 - 55 credits (by credit card not sure if there is another way but it will be worth checking it out, you can also purchase the certificates on this site but only with a credit card you can order by post with a cheque. Freebmd is the same as above but free 1837-around 1910 not all are on yet as they are still doing this one. Electerol Book for the parish will tell you where they lived if they are still living there. But this will only tell you if they are over 21. The IGI which is a Mormon site has some parish records for Marriage and Christenings this could cover 1500-1900, mostly to about 1880. It also has the 1881 census for the British Isles. This site is free. The PRO at Kew for the 1901 census Ancestry is very good they are doing the censuses 1901, 1891 more or less done, 1871, also has the same a freebmd but very easy to check as they take 2nd names in to account a lot of people never used their 1st name so worth checking. Hope this helps Irene
