If you have an adress for him in 1901 ,or adress on a cert for that time , when you log on to the 1901 site instead of doing a person search just look down the list on the left a little and you will see address search click on that and fill in details you will then get a list of the house nos in the particular street that you searched for fortunately i had the address of my relly so i didnt have a problem but his name just didnt come up with a name search good luck Sue

Have you tried just his first name and no surname, my g grandparents I knew were on the 1901 because I have found the census page at Kew, I got tired of waiting for it to come on line. When it did I though I would just see how it worked, could not find them so tried the first names, they were under ...... as they could read the surname, mind you I found it hard and I knew what I was looking for. They have now corrected it, but my nan is still missing from it. Oh well if they will get it done outside UK what can you expect. Irene

Just to say there's still hardware/ironmonger shop - more of a tools specialist really - in Queens Road, Watford. I thought that the local paper's website might have a photo, but I couldn't find one. Just in case they come up with something useful for you later: http://www.watfordobserver.*co.uk/nostalgia (remove *) Christine

After spending hours on research I hope I have found him under: George Pierce, age 26, single, born Warminster, Wiltshire, living on 1901 census: Queens Road, St. Mary, Watford, Hertfordshire, working as hardware merchant manager, ironmonger. When I read this it "clicked" because his future wife`s mother was working at a ironmongers shop on 1901 Census, so I am hoping this is him and this is where he met my grandmother. Thank you once again to all that helped me. Regards Elizabeth

Thank you Christine for your reply. Yes I too found Stuart Price and have printed him out, just in case. Thank you Susan for your tip, please could you tell me how I go about searching address on the Census? I checked Longbridge Deverill page by page, also Westbury., Warminster and Chalford. I have also tried the ages +/-,; tried inmate;visitors: turned the name around, no age, just Wiltshire, all sorts, even searched for him in Sussex hoping he was visiting his grandparents family. I found "Mr. Pearce, Away March 3rd, living in Paddington", know one else on the Cenus page, I printed him out thought I might adopt him if my ggrandfather does not want to be found! Thank you both for all your help, Regards, Elizabeth

I tried looking for men the right age (+/- 5 years) with names starting "St" and born in Wilts. There are lots of Stephens & Stanleys (and a handful of names that look like mistranscriptions, like Stanby!). There are these: Stuart Price 26 Wilts Warminster Wiltshire Warminster Printer Compositor Stewart Ring 28 Warminster Wilts Bridport Railway Porter Stew Scott 21 Wilts Westbury Wilts Westbury Stone Cutter Stuart Tucker 24 Wilts Warminster Wilts Warminster Tailors Clerk Warminster isn't far from Longbridge Deverill, but it would be odd if he were so close to home not to specify the actual birthplace; unless the info was supplied by an employer or landlord or someone else who wasn't too bothered about accuracy. The age discrepancy could be down to handwriting: a 4 can look like a 6, especially if any of the strokes are faded. But if he'd joined up - the Second Boer War was 1899-1902. Christine

Hi Louise, Thank you for your reply, I do possess his marriage certificate, and see he was a labourer, his residence being given as Chalford, Wiltshire, where his parents also lived, maybe they just forgot him on the 1901 Census! Elizabeth

Hi, He's well hidden! I had a good look but no luck yet. If you haven't already, I suggest that you order his marriage certificate as that should give his occupation which would help track him down. Louise

I can not find my grandfather anywhere on the 1901 Cenus although all other members of the family are there. His name is Stewart George Pearce, born 1877 Longbridge Deverill, Wiltshire, age 24, single. He also spellt his name Stuart. I have searched high and low, trying different search options, e.g. S. G.; Pierce, just name of village, date of birth, just surname, etc. no luck. I found his sister under the name Barce instead of Pearce. I was wondering if he signed up to go into the Army if he would be mentioned anywhere? He was still alive because he married 1903 in Wiltshire. Any ideas would be appreciated, thank you.
