I thought an ancestor was escaping from a brutal husband on one census... until I found her in prison! Married women often acted as nurses and so were away from home on census night. Men might similarly have jobs that took them from home. Some just didn't seem to cope with living together. Sometimes we can find the explanations, often we will never know. B

Where are you all looking at the 1861 and 1871 Censuses? Have you all got copies yourself or are they available online somewhere? Would love to know. Thanks, Susan

Hi Irene, Charles lived at Mill Street, Leek & Lowe, Staffs and Mary at London Road, Leek & Lowe, Staffs. Funnily enough, Charles lived at London Road in 1851 but i don't know what his occupation was then.

Vinicular, not sure how its spelt, but that is the other name for that trade. If he did run a pub then he may not have wanted his wife there or she may not have wanted to be there. Were they in the same village or parish. Irene

Hi Louise, To be honest i can't read what Charles' occupation was on the 1861. It looks like it could say publican but just guessing at that. There is another word after it that looks like it starts with Vi........ On the 1881 he is a silk weaver. Not found him on the 1871. Seems to have stayed in the Staffs area though. Tracey

Why would a husband and wife be living apart on the census? This is what i have: 1861 census Charles Cartlidge was head of the household with his mother and children from his first marriage. His first wife died in 1856 and he remarried in 1860. The lady he remarried was Mary Fisher and she can be found on the 1861 with her son from HER first marriage and a child Mary who she had with charles. So, on the 1861 Mary is Mary Cartlidge and her son is George Fisher and daughter Mary Cartlidge. Why would they be living in separate households? I found Mary on the 1871 with George (who is now Cartlidge) and Mary but no sign of Charles anywhere. They turn up together again on the 1881. Anyone shed any light please. Tracey
