Hi Sarah I don't think that there was legal adoption before 1927. This from the familyrecords.gov.uk site: Legal adoption was introduced in the United Kingdom in the first half of the twentieth century. Earlier records of private arrangements can be very difficult to trace. Certificates of adoptions from 1 January 1927 can be obtained from the Family Records Centre.

Hi all, I'm looking for someone who would like to contribute to the 'Essential' topics I've created on the Tips Board and Records Board. I specifically need a short, concise piece about adoption in 19th century. I don't know anything about the subject myself! If someone is willing to come up with one, please contact me. thanks Sarah
