Do you live near Middlesbrough yourself, John? The main library there has lots of useful resources in the upstairs family history section, including a book with the head of each household in the town listed. Jack

John You can search by address on the Government 1901 site, but you have to pay http://www.1901census.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ Unfortunately you cannot do an address search on Ancestry Do you not have a name we can try searching with? Margaret

John Can you help me first? What county would Middlesborough be in then? Margaret

John

John Report 8 Jan 2005 00:36

Margaret It varies between Durham and Yorkshire regarding registration. A bit confusing as sometimes it is shown as North Riding too ! Makes database searches a bit of a lottery john

John Middlesborough is listed as being in Yorkshire on the 1891, but I cannot find any Sands there. I'm afraid that Durham or Yorkshire for 1901 havent been transcribed by Ancestry yet. Margaret

John I've just looked on the Government site as well. Still cant find it. Must be a bad transcription or something. Are you sure the address existed in 1901? Margaret

MArgaret It exists on 1901, looked at details on pay-to-view but William Sands is not there. He was there in 1895 as that was th address on the Death certificate for my g grandmother which I have, which showed William Sands at that address. I am trying to track him down as he is my only genealogical link. cheers john

John Are you sure that William didnt die before the 1901 census. Also, how old would he be? Could he have been fighting in the Boar War in South Africa. My grandmothers brother is missing from the 1901 and I know he wasnt dead, so I am assuming thats where he was. Margaret

margaret That fact may well be true but it hasn't shown up on deaths in Middlesbrough when I searched. He was an itinerant worker so may be hard to pin down, many thanks for your interest and if you turn anything up - brilliant. Grandad who was Thomas Adam Walter Sands ( born 1888)was taken in by a family who worked for Stewarts and Stewarts, Tailors of Middlesbrough, and that's about all I have. His Dad was William and Mum Maria nee Thornton who died in 1895

John I understand your problem, as I have a great uncle who was a travelling stage performer. Still an itinerant. I cant find him on the 1901, probably in the pub. Have checked for a death until he would have been 100. The last we know anything definate was 1912. Disappeared off the face of the earth after that. Margaret

Margaret Perhaps if Census were conducted in the Pubs we would have had a better picture of where our ancestors were !! Big thanks for your interest, catch up with you later, sandman calls. john
