Hi my husbands family from Wethersfield Essex have a lot of strawplaiters, I was told once that they could earn more money than some of the men working on the land. Margaret |

Yes, I too have lots of strawplaiters from Bedfordshire. I have an old postcard which shows an old lady sitting plaiting outside a thatched cottage. It is titled 'Strawplaiting in Bedfordshire'. Hmmm - a little TOO picturesque I think!! Anne |

The women would have been plaiting straw to be made into straw hats. |

Some of my ladies were straw plaiters. They lived in Luton, Beds. It was home work, which they fitted in amongst the scrubbing, washing, ironing, cooking and childcare, for pennies a day towards the family budget. Their work was used in the production of straw boaters and other hats. dave |

Several of my women ancestors were strawplaiters. (the men were in agriculture) Does anyone know anything about this occupation? Thankyou Norma |
