I came across this site for old maps, (all around 1800-1890) Had a look at my home town and found it was not there, not becuse of a missing map, It never existed in 1856 www(.)old-maps(.)co(.)uk/oldmaps/index_external.jsp remove()

Ordnance Survey also has a site with a Get-a-map section (altho' it has some odd quirks about what it does & doesn't find!). Once you find the right place, if you click on Historical Maps, it's a link to a site of v early (19th Century) OS maps and it comes up on the same area as you were on with Get-a-map (if you see what I mean!). I use www*streetmap*uk*co [replace * with . to use] in conjunction with a road atlas and a London A-Z. nell

I use multimap too. If you get the urge to visit the place, you can even get directions from your home (if you're in the Uk that is)

Nice idea. I often google place names, especially if i am not sure the even exist. lol Most villages/towns seem to have a web site about something - and sometimes you strike lucky with some nice photos of the area. Genuki is good place to look for places too - it gives a nice description and history of the place and often an old OS map of the area.

During my 2/3 months of trawling the Message Boards I have noticed that there frequent requests for assistance in locating place names. Can I suggest that you trawl through that 'heap of useless software you received (for free) with your computer' you may find that you have some form of Road Atlas, they come under many names such as AUTOROUTE etc. Load it on your computer and you will be amazed how useful it is when added to 'your favourites' If you fail to find a Road Atlas in that heap of useless software try Googling " Free Road Maps"
