Why would the same birth be registered twice?

My Grt Grandmothers birth was registered both in Edinburgh and Dalkeith on the same day with the same info. The only difference is that the Edinburgh certificate states that she was illigitimate. Any suggestions as to why this would have been done, the birth was in 1900. Mother and Father both registered at the two places. Thanks Carole

Are the informants not on the Certs? Bob

If the informants are the same, then perhaps they didn't like the fact that "illigitimate" was stated on the first cert so registered it again at a different office without declaring the illigitimacy the second time. Just a guess, though.

Hi I have come across exactly the same thing. Same child registered twice - once in Glasgow and once in Stornoway. Date of birth is the same but a few days difference in the date of registration - all the other details are the same and the father is shown on both. The child is registered with the father's surname. The Glasgow one is marked illegitimate but the Stornoway one isn't. The mother originated from Stornoway - maybe she didn't want her family to know she wasn't married.
