the very last colum (if deaf& dumb, blind, lunatic, feeble minded) is ticked it obvisously means that that person is one - but how do you know which 1?

Louise When you look at that image it's only people that are not born in Lancashire who are ticked. Your Margaret born in Wales, Mary ODonnell born in Ireland and what looks like Fanny? Whelan born in Cheshire. I have seen this before on the census, it does not mean they have any of these disabilities mentioned in that column. Ppat x

Victoria Report 5 Jan 2005 17:15

hi all, I have got someone in the 1871 and 1881 census and it is written in the column that he is blind. I have also come accross one where is said imbecile for every person ( it was taken in an asylum) So maybe they usually put the disability. I might be wrong, just wanted to share my findings with you, Best wishes, victoria

Yes Victoria I should have said that as well, normally there would not be just a tick as it would be unlikely that three different households would have people with all these disabilities. Pat x

Think you'll find the ticks are same as those annoying ones which frequently go over the very bit of info you needed to see! They were added later when the information from the enumerators book was transferred to some sort of central record.
