My GG grandfather is down as a widower on 1881 but I have just discovered his wife did not die till 1896. However I don't think it was a transcription error - I think it was him who was lying! I've not quite got to the end of this story yet but it seems to involve another 'wife' and some money she left when she died!!! Anne |

Hi all, After his wife (my ggg grandmother) had died he had remarried but she had died before the census. On the census he is listed with his children, but no housekeeper. Thank you so much for your help Lucia :-) |

Did he, by any chance, have a "housekeeper" living with him? |

Hi Maybe he had remarried and his wife was away from home on the day of the census. Just a thought. EricX |

Is this the transcription, because perhaps the original image has a W that looks like a M. nell |

Maybe because that's what he told the census taker. Or a mistake. Or maybe it's the wrong person? |

My ancestor is recorded on the 1881 census as married when he was a widower. Why? Thanks, Lucia :-) |
