This is my grandad who was real. He reckons he was born in Middlesbrough in 1888 but I can find no trace of him anywhere. His mother was Maria (nee Thornton) born c. 1864/5 at Byfield ,Northamptonshire, who died in 1895 in Middlesbrough which I have evidence for plus his sisters I also have evidence for and other siblings. All I have is his marriage certificate dated 10 Nov 1915 for Parish Church, Masbrough, York If anyone can help me get past this impasse it would be greatly appreciated regards John Sands

Glen, that is superb !!! You have found him and his father. I was looking totally in the wrong place. My grandad was only 6 when his mum died so his recollection could have been vague. Many, many thanks - I will pick up the thread you have found Kindest regards John Sands

John, I looked on Ancestry & got nowhere so I thought I'd have alook at FreeBMD and there they were. No luck with the births of Maria & William though there is a William Walter in Sunderland in 1864. Have had no luck with Census records either.

Glen, thanks for that I have traced Maria's birth to Byfield, but my G-Grandad was an itinerant groom who was working in that area, so I have no idea where he came from. I will be contacting Daventry Records office for copy of marriage cert. as that may throw somethin up cheers john
