Val wish I'd never started Report 4 Jan 2005 11:19

I was told two of my Uncles who were Brothers had died during the War but after all sorts of searching, got talking to an Aunt yesterday and she suddenly mentioned meeting this Man in the 1950s and then went on to tell me his name and that he had gone off to Scotland which is the same circumstances as the one I had been researching, that she had previously forgotten to tell me about, as it had slipped her mind . So there we go another mystery solved.Relatives dont we just love them ?????????

Valerie After searching for hours and spending a fortune on 1837 trying to locate my ggrandfather's death, my Dad casually mentions 'Oh, he was 89 when he died, died right before you were born'. 20 years later than when I'd finally given up searching. Thank goodness I didn't buy loads more credits and keep going! Lou

I've got one of these at the moment. My Nan is still alive, I get the impression my great grandmother, her mother led a strange life. My Nan is second of 5 known children, only her and a 15 years younger sister are still alive. Now years ago, I found a picture of a man she told me was her father. the name Henry Curd was on the back of it. It was also mentioned that he had had a son that had died at sea and he was very upset about it. I am pretty certain that this man was not my Nan's natural father, not sure if he was the natural father of any of them. Anyway, another member on here kindly located my great grandmother for me, the names, dates all fitted and there was also record of her marrying this Henry Curd in 1918. I had previously found it a bit difficult to locate her as her name was Violet Palmer, quite a common name. This still doesn't cause a prob to my mind even if it was 4 years after my Nan was born. Now the twist, another member has come up with some research that says after marrying henry Curd there was a soon called Reece Curd, born 1919. This just doesn't add up. Also says they lived up in Kent for about 5 years at least, I honestly don't think my Nan ever lived there, if they did live there, my Nan would have been 5 - 10 years old, she would remember. Oh, it's really strange, but my Nan is not the most upfront of people, if I ask her too much she will act confused and disinterested completely, you can't get info out of her. If anyone is bored..................................

I spent ages looking for a rellie on the 1901 census, and as it is a common name I had loads of possibilities. No-one even could tell me that birthplace. I mentioned this problem to my family several times and even asked them to look at a few I thought most likely. It was only when a programme about the Boer War was shown on TV that someone piped up that he had fought there and what a change it must have been from Leeds where he was born! Oh, I could have screamed.

I know. My mother is now 80 and when we discuss our family she often tells me things as though offering fresh info, when she is actually just reiterating stuff I've told her from my research! On the other hand, I found some old primary school exercise books the other day and one of them has the date of our school trip to the Natural History Museum when I was 7. I would have sworn that I was 10 when I went, so memory does play tricks! nell
