It is not always the case that the relationships are to the Head. One of my rellies is listed as Visitor (although I think she was related in some way) and her two children were listed as son and daughter - but they are definitely her children and not the children of the Head............Hope this makes sense!! Hi Kylie, The way I read this is Esther E. Stead is John's sister and Kathleen is the daughter of another of John's sisters(Jane). It appeared that children often lived with aunts and uncles in those days. Some of my ancestors really hop around from house to house in various censuses. It's also possible they were just visiting, not actually living there. Hope this helps Sarah |

This is how I read it:- Jane is the sister of John, which would make Kathleen Barber John and Catherine's neice, who was staying with them on the night of the census. The most likely explanation for Ester is that she is John's sister, and Stead is her married name. Hope this helps |

Hoping somebody can work out this for me. On 1901 Census I have a John Tomlinson aged 56 with wife Catherine Tomlinson aged 54 An Esther E. Stead is listed as sister aged 40 and a Kathleen Barber is listed as Niece aged 13. Kathleen is actually the daughter of Jane (nee Tomlinson) and Edward Barber. Can anyone explain what is going on? THank you. |
