Katherine,Have you tried the 1901 census.I have been looking for grandad 1870 for years.Found his wife and child on 1901 ancestry census but not him.Found him last night on the 1901 census site on that night living with his sister.Ancestry had copied his name wrong and age.It does cost to view an image. I found his marriage which I knew about but nothing comprehensive on the death front but will have a look again tomorrow - you've given me a good link - I didn't know about that site. That info came from FreeBMB freebmd.rootsweb(.)com (remove the brackets). You could look for CHhrles's death on there, note the reference number, then go to the PRO website, www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content, and order a copy for £7. This will give the cause of death.

Thanks for the info on William too. This is really helpful - we were at such a dead end with the Beisiegel brothers. Do you think Charles's death would be in a newspaper? How can we find out how William and Ernest died - can I find death certificates somewhere??

Thank you Peter - where do you find info like that? Do you think William may also have died before 1901 - Mum recalls my Grandmother talking about an uncle she knew but perhaps this is just hearsay as she wasn't born until 1914. The other interesting thing we wanted to research and you may have an idea where to look is that Charles Beisiegel was run over and killed by a motor car (must have been an early one and I didn't realise they went fast enough to kill anyone but hey!!)

hi katharine have searched 1881 and come up with Chas b.1851 pimlico selina b. 1848 Birmingham William j.c b.1879 wandsworth Ernest j b.1880 wandsworth tried searching 1891, also tried wales isle of man and channel islands and could not find any of them it maybe as people have suggested that the name has been mis transcribed In 1901 census i have found Charles 50 Selina 53 Frank V 19 ( son ) born wandsworth hope this is of some help to you, Jim

Katherine I'd ask someone who has access to see if they can find them in 1891 - it will give their place of birth to help find them on 1901. It iwll also confirm which is the elder, and they should both be with Charles at that time. nell

I think they were born in Camberwell but again only because Frank was so I'm not sure!

Mis-transcription is certainly the problem here. I have had the same problem as half of my family are German with German names. Where were they born? Searching on just the first name is not going to be very useful, as the names are very common.

Thanks for the help - I'm looking for William Beisiegel and Ernest Beisiegel brothers of Frank (who I can find, living in Wandsworth), William was born in 1880 and Ernest in 1879 (could have those dates confused). Their father was Charles (also found). I tried your advice but had no luck but I am a bit of a novice!! I'd be very grateful for any help.

Hi Katherine, Many names were mistranscribed at the time or could have been mistranscribed onto the 1901 database. I found my Punters as Printers and on ancestry as Beuters! Sometimes only their first name initials are recorded as has happened with my family, If you post some details on here maybe we can help, Lucia :-)

They should be on the census regardless of where they were, unless they were out of the country. The military, hospitals, prisons, workhouses and other institutions all did census returns. The biggest problem with these places is that very often just the initials were recorded. There are also a lot of mis-transcriptions, you need to widen your search. Try searching with just the first name and the date and place of birth. This is particularily successful if they were born in a small villiage. Try searching on both Ancestry and GRO, as I think they are from different transcriptions. I know that there are discrepancies between the two with my rellies. If you are still stuck, try posting some details on here, sometimes a fresh pair of eyes, or a different tack on searching can help. Peter

Please can someone help!?! I'm searching for my great grandfather's brothers who do not seem to be on the 1901 census even though I know at least one of them was still alive - so where could they be?!? I don't really understand how the census works - if they were away from home when it was done would they be missed out? Thanks in advance for any help!!
