Looks like it is the right one - just a thought have you checked the baptism register - there may be a father entered on there. Lyn

Samantha I have just had a look on Ancestry and it looks very much like you have the right person. I would say on the Marriage Cert Charles has done what one of my rellies did and listed his grandfather as father (not only does it save face but they would not have known anyone else as their father). I cannot find anyone else that's close on the census either. Good Luck Pat x

Looks very much like it, Sam. Censuses are ideal for checking your info. and for adding some colour to the bare bones of a Family Tree. By the way, the Metcalfe Clan owned most of Wensleydale at one time.

Sometimes if people were brought up by a grandparent then they would describe that person as parent. May not have wanted the shame of 'father unknown'

Charles METCALF married Rachel ROBERTS on 3rd August 1889 in Durham. Charles' father is listed as Henry Metcalf on the cert and his age is 21 which would mean he was born around 1868. Marriage was in Durham. I can find him and his wife and children on the 1901 census, no problems, born again around 1868 and birth place as Suffolk (Low Green). Census location Durham. The problem comes with his parents! As I said the marriage cert listed his father as Henry. But the only birth cert I can find which seems close is as follows: Born Sept 1867, in Denstone, Suffolk. Unnamed father Caroline Metcalf as mother Im trying to find him in the 1881 census, I have come across the following entry: Living In Durham with grandparents Henry & Jane Metcalf Born 1868 in Denstone, Suffolk. Living in Durham. Have i got the right one? I cant find any other entries that look plausible.... What do you think!?
