Yes you can!! I successfully found my grandfather by putting in 'Tom' and a four year age range in the village where he was born. His family had been mistrancribed as STREET instead of STRUTT. About 10 Tom/Thomas appeared but it was easy to pick out which was mine. I was well pleased!! :) Anne

Gail If you look for her under her maiden name and can't find her, you can do a search using her first name, place and date of birth. BUT unless she is the only person that comes up, you might have to go through several pages - unless you know who she married. Go on, give us a clue! Put her details and we can all have a go! nell

Hi all, I could give Age and place of birth plus her maiden name but I think she may have married. Gail

If you are looking on the official site (as opposed to Ancestry) you need to give an age and place of birth as well as a first name, but you can do it. Obviously it helps if your relative had an unusual first name or you can limit the place of birth to a town instead of a county. That's how I found my great-grandfather as his surname had been mistranscribed as LENORTHEY when it was in fact SMOOTHY. nell

Richard in Perth Report 2 Jan 2005 13:27

Not necessarily, Annette. It depends how much supporting info you have to narrow it down, and how rare the name is of course. E.g. if all you have to go on is John, age 26 from Yorkshire, then forget it. But if you have Jabez or Job, from a smallish town or village, then very often a first name search will find that badly transcribed surname for you.

okay thanks for that Gail

You could enter just a first name and an approximate age and area. The problem is you would get hundreds of results, depending on how common the name is.
