Susan Norris (01/01/2005 14:49:39) | Update Message | Delete Message I have traced my Grandfather's family to Clerkenwell in London. The family consisted of Edward Norris, his "wife" (I don't know if they were married, can't find any record) Anne D Norris and five children up to the 1881 Census. Edward born in 1874, Kate in 1877, Frederick in 1879, and James in 1881. My grandfather was born in 1883, Albert Edward Norris. They lived at 8 Wynyatt Street, Clerkenwell, London. Sometime after 1883 the family disintegrated. I have found Edward the eldest at the age of 17 living in Shoreditch (via the 1891 Census) and perhaps Kate working as a servant. The rest of the family i.e Edward and Anne and the three youngest children seem to have disappeared off the face of the earth. They do not appear anywhere in the 1891 or 1901 Census. Family lengend has it my grandfather and his immediate brothers went into an institution. Has anyone any tips on how to search for records in an institution i.e an orphanage? I can find no records ie. death for the parents so how do I search for them if there are no records coming up. Thanks for your patience in reading this - any replys gladly received. Many thanks. If theyw ere in an institution they should still appear on the 1891 or 1901 census, unless they somehow had a name change. Ann Glos

The problem with institutions is that some of them only list people by their initials. I had real trouble trying to find my grandfather on the 1901. After a hell of a long time I found him with his remarried mother and stepsister under the "new" name. Perhaps this is a possibility for Anne and the youngest children.

Thanks for messages. Have found grandfather in 1901 census but what has happened to the others I do not know! I have done a death search for Anne Norris but nothing comes up in the 1880s so will have to keep trying! Thanks for your replies Sue

Have you tried looking for the missing children with variations on surname - perhaps they have been mistranscribed as Morris or Horris or Harris? nell
