Hi, I use a rewritable cd - everytime I update my Family Tree 2005 I just shove in the cd and click, back up to RW CD and thats it. So if the computer crashes, God forbid, I have it all on CD and can just put in all back in on the program.

You need a CD-R to rewrite CDs. Whether or not you have one depends on how ancient your PC is. Then you can install some software (like Nero). It might be easier for you to save it onto a floppy disk as all computers (bar laptops) have these. I have index cards, one for each person in my tree. There're four colours, one for each of my grandparents' branches. The front contains all the vital statistics, the back has any notes (eg on alternative spellings) and any certificate references. I also have a folder full of the census returns.

Hi Linda, just saw your message. Yes, it isnt difficult if you have a fairly newish pc. Mine is 4 years old, so not state of the art! I have Nero burning program which you probably have anyway. On the FT2005 program, you just click on file, then on back up and then tick RWCD (obviously you have your rewritable cd in the slot!) and the program does it all for you!
