Hi Not sure what date you are looking at but in 1926 the Legitimacy act allowed illegitimate children to be re-registered on the subsequent marriage of the parents. Jayne

Lorraine Maybe his mum and dad married after his birth, and he then acquired his father's surname. Or perhaps he didn't want people to know he was illegitimate. People can change their name by deed poll but they don't have to. There's more information here: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/familyhistory/name/ nell

You can call yourself by any surname you want. No legal process was required so he could use whichever surname he wanted. He may have made the name change official - the National Archives should have a record if he did - but it wouldn't have been legally necessary Lou

My great grandfather was registered at birth as Joseph Daykin (mothers maiden name) but on his Marriage certificate his name was Joseph Loftus which was his fathers surname. The question is = What path would he have to follow in order to change his name from Daykin to Loftus. Would it be by adoption? or by another source, and how would I go about looking for this information. Thanks in advance Lorraine.
