finding soldiers on census

i've just checked the 1871 census i think i've found him as its been updated i still don't know where he was in 1901 but i think i might be getting somewhere, i think its two ts now

It's probably asking the obvious, but... Have you tried different spellings - like two Ts in Matthew instead of one? Christine

i only have rough information i've tried different censuss with no luck according to my gran he was born about 1869 he married mary mcqueen but i'm not sure when and he was a sergeant in the guards although i'm not sure which regiment

Christopher these were the only Donovan who were soliders I could find : Fredrick Donovan 16 New Zealand Private Soldier Heavitree Devon George Donovan 20 Lambeth, Surrey, England Soldier Portsmouth Hampshire James Donovan 15 St Helens, Lancashire, England Soldier Portland Dorset James Donovan 23 Fareham, Hampshire, England Soldier Sandown Hampshire Joseph Donovan 19 Bermondsey, Middlesex, England Soldier Woolwich London No Mathew - how old would he have been and do you know where he was born ?? his name was mathew donovan, i know he was in the guards,i'm assuming the coldstreams or grenadiers

I know it's an obvious question but have you search for him in 1901 - if he's in barracks you might be lucky and find a 'soldier' ..........what was his name etcc...I could have a look for you esta

If he was fighting in the Boer war, I don't think he would be on the census. If he was in barracks he might be listed under his initial only, and would probably not be anywhere near where you expect him to be. If you know his regiment you can google it. If he was young enough to have fought in WW1, you might be able to find his records on the A2A site.

i think my grandfather was a soldier during the 1901 census, does anyone have any ideas how i could track him down?
