Heather Thanks for the information about ages soldiers were allowed to get married. I always wondered why my g.g.grandfather waited until he was 30....perhaps that explains it! Don't suppose you know where this information came from? I'd love to know more! Thanks. Natalie

Hi Christopher, I too would say try and get as much information from their website first. Make sure you are perpared and have a list of things that you want to look for in order of priority. The staff there are extremely helpful and really know their stuff. You can't take sharpeners or erasers into the search rooms. Make sure you have money for any copies you may need, there is a locker room (free) and a cafe/restaurant downstairs. Good luck Naomi

Look at the A2A site to get as many reference numbers as possible; it saves time once there and you can even order them so they're ready when you arrive. Take your glasses if you have them, take pencils and a notebook and take paracetamol as microfiche readers can give you a headache after a while.

Hi, have you found him on the census records? I was looking for husbands GGFx2 and found him as a soldier in barracks, by trawling back a bit I found the regiment 36th Hereford. It may be worth having a look at the census if you havent already and just seeing if a regiment is shown when he was in barracks. Someone on here recently gave the info that these guys werent allowed to marry until 30 if they joined at 18 or 26 if they joined at 14 (poor little souls). So it is likely any soldier ancestor will be shown in barracks on at least one census.
