Thanks for your help - as I thought! I am desperate to find out where my grandfather came from as although I know his army number and regiment I can't seem to find any appropriate records to tell me his age or birth place which of course will help with the rest of his family. I believe he was in India for the 1891 census but he was either in Canterbury or Ireland for 1901. Should be able to find him at a camp/barracks on 1901 census then! Will try again. Stella |

If they were posted to Ireland, which was still part of the UK as a whole at that time, they will appear on the Census. But you have two problems!?!?!? One is that the Camp/Barracks would appear in the County/town area, not as a separate Folio/Piece. The second is that if they were in Ireland, your earliest complete Census is 1901. Paul |

I think you will find that if a person was not in the UK on the census date/s, then they won't appear on the census. I know that Naval personnel were only on the census if they were shore-based or the ship was in dock, not if they were at sea. Unless anyone else knows better ...!! Mandy :) |

Can someone advise me as to what the usual practice was for army personnel on census day. I am assuming that if they were at a barracks in England/Wales then they would appear as living at that site. However, if they happened to be posted abroad /Ireland on that day, would they appear on the census at all? I am wondering if this is why I can't find my grandfather on either census. Thanks in anticipation Stella |
