The youngest children will hopefully be born in 1912 or later. By this stage the birth indexes will give mother's maiden name, so you can search for any whose mother's name matches your great grandmother. If the registration district is the same as for your grandfather, then look at all the intervening years for that registration district. This method does not work for my distant Hawkins cousins in Portsmouth, but is very useful for rarer surnames in country areas. B

I would have thought Titch just meant he was little. Try the FreeBMD for the kids births.

Hi Jeanette Yes I am looking for siblings of my grandfather, who I believe was the oldest, unfortunately he was born early 1901 so the census doesn't help me and although the surname - Butt - isn't partucularly common there are quite a lot and I don't want to waste too much money sending for certs!! Also I know his brother was called 'Titch' but I don't know what this stands for, any ideas gratefully received. Thanks Trudy

Am I reading this right? Is it the siblings of your Grandfather you're looking for? (I ask because I am notoriously blonde! lol). But if it is your Grandfathers siblings you want and he was the oldest then most of them should be on the 1901 Census with him and his parents. If they don't all appear on that Census then ask for an 1891 look up as the others may appear on there. Jeanette x

We tend not to look for baptism records until we get back before civil registration but it is more than likely that your grandfather and his siblings were baptised. If you can access them baptism records would confirm the parents' names without the expense of sending off for certificates. If they lived in a fairly big, urban parish the register from the early 1900s has probably been deposited in the county records office, if not it may still be in the parish in which case you will need to contact the vicar or church wardens.

Probably depends on how common the name is on where located. Birth records are available on FreeBMD for several years after 1901 so you can at least check out those years for likely matches. Then would need to send off for the Birth Certificates to confirm. After that you will need to get access to the full BMD either at a library / record office / 1837online. Also local newspapers in the library might have birth announcements. If the family stayed in one area then you can work back from Deaths which are online for the period after 1983 and searchable at 1837online and ancestry. These can be very useful as they give a date of birth. Again if an unusual name then these are worth checking then try and find where the birth was recorded on the BMD before deciding whether worth sending off for a certificate. MB

Hi can anybody point me in the right direction, please!!! My grandfather was the oldest of eight children, and was born in January 1900. As there are no censuses available after 1901 is there a way I can find other children for this couple and confirm that I am looking at the right ones? Any help gratefully received. Thanks Trudy
