Thank you both for your suggestions. I just wanted confirmation that I was thinking along the same lines. Thank you p.s. Alfred survived WW 1 and died a dustman.

My mother was born 1915. Her birth cert shows father George Jackson "Driver 4th Durham Field Artillery no 1347 [coal miner putter]." In other words, he was in the army, no 1347, on that date, but his previous occupation was a coal miner, putter.[This was the man who pushed the coal wagons]. So the certificates showed current military service in WW1 and also previous occupation. Your guy was previously a dustman.

Seems a likely explanation. Did he die during the war (in which case he'll probably be recorded on the CWGC website) or in peace-time? Christine

My Great Grandfather's occupation on my Great Uncle's birth certificate dated 1/10/1915 reads the following ... Driver Royal Engineers (Borough Council Dustman). In 1901 he was a Corporal in the army. When my great great grandma died, his occupation was dustman. Do you think he was recruited back in the army as a driver but his job as a dustman kept open to him? This is how I am reading this entry. I would appreciate any feedback. Thanks
