History websites?

Does anyone know of any history websites? Preferably one with a 'timeline' of all important inventions/events? I have traced my family back to the early 1800's but just having names doesn't mean much. I would ideally like to discover what life was like in the time they were living. Did they have electricity, had telephones been invented and things like that. I have tried google but haven't found one will lots of relevant info on one site. Anyone know of one I can try? Thanks Sam

I think you'll find something like that on the BBC website. Christine

Not websites but to get an idea of life in the 19th century I would really recommend a visit to one of the living museums - the ones I have been to are Beamish, Ironbridge (think it's called the Victorian town - really interesting) also one near Wolverhampton which I think might be called the Black Country museum. I'm sure there are others around the country. Probably worth looking at their web-sites as well.

Thanks folks The BBC one seems to be very good, I've been on arewerelated and although it is an excellent website and I have joined up, I couldn't find any history links? Thanks for all your suggestions, I think a visit to a museum may be coming in the not too distant future. If only I had been interested in history when I was at school! Sam

the BBC site certainly used to have history stuff - in the education areas. Christine
