I think jeanette i will have to get his birth cert. On his marriage cert his father has changed his surname to the same as my gr gr gr grandfathers. Thanks everyone for your help

Morning Melvyn It could well be that the children were the mothers to a previous marriage or relationship and that the Head has taken them on as his own. This has happened on the census in my family where I know full well that the Head isn't the natural father of one of the children, but she is referred to as 'daughter'. Is it possible to get a birth cert for your 3x great Grandfather or a look at the parish registers? That should state who the father was Jeanette x

It was stepfather/stepson?? Mother of child had been married previously??

Is there any reason why my Gr Gr Gr Grandfather would have his mothers surname as todoes his two sisters but on the Census the relation to the head box says that he is the heads son. but he has a different surmname . Hope someone can help
