Thank you all so much for your help and advice. I have asked to see if I can get a copy of the cert from my late rellies family so I'll see where I can go from there. Thank you for the info on jet - I have some jet myself, from Whitby, but it was great to get confirmation from you all that the occupation 'jet worker' definately meant that. Thank you all again, Emma - Happy New Year Louise - I have sent you an private email regarding the info you gave me - thank you

They are still making jet jewellry in Whitby.Made popular by Queen Victoria.Whitby is also famous as the place Captain James Cook sailed from in the Endeavour. It still has the quaint back streets off Church Street.Heartbeat uses it as part of their locations and Goathland is the mythical Aidensfield.Goathland is just inland from Whitby. As you can tell its one of my favourite places having spent many caravan holidays there as a child.

Emma It is quite possible that a 12 year old would work in a jet factory. In case you didn't know jet is a stone local to Whitby and made into such things a jewellery and ornaments. Not the flying kind! lol Jeanette x

Hi, thats possible actually, I should imagine he was making jewellery from jet. Try to get the marriage cert your relative had, that will make it a lot clearer. Its important to get it accurate otherwise you will never feel confident about the information Good luck.

Heather, I'm not sure about being 20 yrs old and a scholar either. But on the same census page the 12 yr old is a jet worker and I'm not sure about that either!! Emma

Wendy, My info has came from a late family member a couple of years ago. Hannah White apparently married a Thomas White in abt 1875. This info did apparently come from the marrage cert. She's not a direct ancestor of mine, she's sister to my ggg grandfather. I thought it must be the same Hannah in the 1881 census as there were many members of this family born in the same street including my ggg grandfather. The first names of her children are all taken from her siblings also. Thanks Emma

Unless Hannah White married another White I cant see you have the same person there Im afraid. Unless they havent bothered to write daughter in law? But then the Thomas on the 1871 says he is 20 and a scholar??? Not sure about this. You need to check for a marriage of said Hannah.

Hello, Can I suggest you have the wrong Hannah in 1881? If she was an unmarried daughter aged 18 named Hannah White in 1871, she cannot be a WIFE called Hannah White in 1881. This Hannah had MARRIED someone called White. How did you arrive at Hannah White anyway? If you have worked backwards from known facts [the only way to do it] you must know more about her later life, who she married etc. Where did the name first arise? Bear in mind it is a common name. Hello all. I'm relatively new to this and would really appreciate some advice. I've found the lady I'm currently looking for (Hannah White) in the 1871 and 1881 census but cannot find her or her husband in the 1891 or 1901 census. The info I have so far is: 1871 Bransby White 54 Head Bricklayer HANNAH WHITE 18 Dau Domestic Servant Isaac P White 10 Son Scholar James S White 12 Son Jet Worker Robert White 14 Son Jet Worker Thomas White 20 Son Scholar 6 Saltpan Wells, Whitby, Yorkshire 1881 HANNAH WHITE 29 Wife Hannah M. White 5 Dau James White 1 Son Thomas White 30 Head Fruit Dealer Franks Yard, Church Street, Whitby, Yorkshire I'm at a loss as to where to look next as all I've really used so far is census. Also, is there such a thing as an 1861 online census? Many thanks in advance Emma - quickly becoming addicted!
