I get rather frustrated with it. I wish it had a search facility as good as the LDS census bit. I am getting info from there as much as i can then going to ancestry which is a bit daft! Ann

Stephanie I have found this happening more more lately with Ancestry as they seem to change the system more often. As you say you can get from zero to 3,000, the old system was far better. Same with the registrations of Births marriages & deaths, you used to be able to see from the listing what the event was now you have to click each individual to check what the event is. Pity they don't go back to the original system which was far easier to use, but I don't think this will happen. Good Luck. Pat x

I have tried the exact and variant options, tends to be one extreme - ie zero - to another. It can be useful to have variations listed, I have sometimes found spellings I would never have dreamed of! plus births in the same area which have later become useful, but to trawl thru 3000+ of mostly irrelevant records gets me cross-eyed after a while :-) At least I know that I'm not the only one having this problem. Thanks all - and a happy new year. Steph.

There are also two tabs at the top of the search box - one is for exact matches and one is for nearest matches. It's possible you have clicked in the 'nearest matches' box, then you will get thousands of returns! Just a thought, hope it might help. Mandy :)

I found the same thing too many options but I am sure I read on here somewhere to put less info

I got onto AncestryPlus and it did the same. I even put in DOB in the 1984-1993 death index and it still returned over 3000 results.

Does anyone else have problems searching on ancestry.com/co.uk? The more info I put in the less it seems to refine my search - I put both County and District for a family surname with a year range and it still returned more than 3000 from all over the country and for all years. It's very frustrating!!! If I'm missing something obvious, someone put me out of my misery? Thanks as always, Steph.
