Thank you every one, this is great. Thanks Mike for the Rutland census info. The Charles H Tatam info on the 1871 is one of the Tatams that I thoght interesting. He is not mine as mine was in NZ then and was younger, but I am wondering if he might be related, father maybe. Christine

Rutland Water is a reservoir that was formed, near Stamford. in Lincolnshire possibly known as the Empingham reservior. There is a village, and church that was submerged in this lake, and the spire is still visible....... however Rutland, was an area which contained Stamford,Uppingham, and Oakham, towns, these lie approx north of Corby....there was at one time an uproar when Rutland was axed as a county..........and a campaign to get it re instated.........

Rutland was the smallest county in England, often people who lived NEAR the boundary told their friends that they lived IN Rutland as it was the"in" place to live in that area. Also in Victorian times the rural boundaries tended to be a bit vague many people could not read let alone follow a map. I believe Rutland was swallowed up under boundary changes in the 1970s and came under "HuntsPeterborough" Much to the dismay of the locals, many of whom were very proud of their territory and objected to changes. I am unsure whether the locals were able to persuade the powers to restore Rutland as a county in its own right. This may be of help to you. Maurice

Moulton, Lincs, Just S of the A151, halfway between Spalding and Holbeach(4 miles East of Spalding) Peter in Auckland

Moulton is half way between Spalding and Holbeach in the very south of Lincolnshire, the area is/was called Holland, for obvious reasons if you ever get to go there. Although Rutland borders on Lincolnshire, this part is not really all that close. Regards, Yvonne

Northamptonshire would be nearer Rutland.

Christine According to Google, there's a Moulton in Northamptonshire and there's also one in Cheshire, near to Northwich Lou

I am searching for the family of my gg grandfather Charles Henry Tatam. Information that I have says that he came from Rutland, but not more specific than that. I have looked at the 1871 and 81 census on Ancestry and there do not appear to be any Tatam's from Rutland, but quite a few from Lincolnshire, particularly Moulton that look possible. I am basing that on family names and the fact that they look wealthy, which fits the family story, so may be completely off beam. Any clues as to where Moulton may be it is not on my atlas. Thanks Christine in NZ
