Unfortunately when it comes to German ancestry, there's not much to help if you don't know the exact place they were from. It's taken me years to find out where my grandmother was from (found a relative who had her birth certificate). Censuses were conducted in Germany however they were more tolls of the population than anything else. No central archives either. Might be an idea to join a German mailing list on rootsweb (free). I have recently discovered that I might have German / Belgium ancestors. What is the best way to search these people out. Did the Germans perform census returns? If so, where could i find them. Any help is greatfully appreciated |
