Is something wrong with the search on Ancestry??

I am putting in specific details for 1901, & it is giving me 3,000 entries, none of which are even close to what I asked for!?!? eg I tried McKinley, birthplace Ireland......& I got 3,000 McKinleys from all over the UK !! I also tried Abraham Walford & got every Walford in UK. |

I wonder why it is working for you Tracy?? How strange. Thanks for the offer, but I think i'd better get to bed.....I am off early tomorrow to visit the inlaws for Christmas. Not really looking forward to the 6 hour drive though. Merry Christmas!! |

Over the search box there are two tabs: Best Matches (ranked) and Exact Matches Only. Perhaps you have hit the Best Matches tab by mistake - it gives lists of names like the ones you've been getting. |

Judith....there are no tabs on the search box I am looking at. Are you looking at 1901? I am in Ancestry Plus. Is that different to Ancestry?? |

Yes, I have the 1901 England Census search box in front of me. Just above where you enter the name you are searching for are 2 boxes which look like the tabs on the top of filing cards. The one above the first name says Best Matches (Ranked) the one above the Last name sys Exact Matches Only. |
