By googling I found: Specialty Definition: CONVULSIONS Domain Definition Health A general term referring to sudden and often violent motor activity of cerebral or brainstem origin. Convulsions may also occur in the absence of an electrical cerebral discharge (e.g., in response to hypotension). (references) Babies and infants are likely to suffer these as a result of very high temperatures - remember they didn't have calpol back then. People use the term now as in "we were in convulsions" meaning laughing excessively. nell

Convulsions is another word for 'fits' lots of children suffer from these if their temperature spikes due to illness could also be a symptom of a condition like epilepsy! Hope this helps & Merry Christmas *

Convulsions are what we would now call a seizure or fit.

I have recently acquired from sks who is a relative of mine (distant though) the death certificate of Thomas NEWMAN, who was the son of my ggg grandfather (brother to this guy's ancestor), aged 2 days old. Dated 13th April 1851, says the child died of 'convulsions' . What might this mean? Chloe
