My very basic understanding is that Cromwell took men from Scotland to fight and quell the Catholic's. Most of the Protestants in Ireland came from these men. Also for work etc there was much movement between Ireland and Scotland. Many of my Scottish rellies were based in Ayrshire but moved between the two over a few generations. There are several Scots-Irish sites, google since I havent got the add. It is a great pain trying to track them down.

my elusive gt grandfather was George McKinley born in Ireland, about 1863 according to the 1891 & 1901 census. I just found a site which was talking about US president McKinley, & it said the name is an Ulster-Scots surname. Does this mean the family may have been from Scotland originally?? Oh I wish I understood UK history & geography !?!? (PS.my mother was always told that she was related to US president McKinley)
