Hi, I think there is a "closure" of 75 or a 100 years on prison records - even admissions. You may have more luck with local newspapers. Gwynne

As far as I know (no experience) A prisoners TIME started from the moment he was classed as being in prison, this would also cover any remand time. He/she would then serve from that time, with remission time deducted for good behaviour. This could also be lost for various resons. In totel the remission time would add up to 1/3 of the term. There was also parole time, this is served as the remission time in civvy street.

I am trying to find out why and for how long a relative was in a particular prison in the 1960s. I've read information from the Prison Service and although it mentions Prison Calendars, it's not very clear what I should be doing next. I'm trying not to be thick, and I've tried several variations on google, but can't seem to work it all out. I've also tried to decipher the National Archives website without success. Can anyone explain exactly what prison calendars are, and where I can access them? Very grateful thanks! Mandy :)
