You really need to check parish records [not just the IGI] to find the parents, firstly of your Matthew. How do you know he was the first son of George? You need to find his baptism first, and then check in the parish records for siblings born to the same parents. Only then will you be sure.

Helen George Coombs was a coachman, info courtesy of his childrens baptism and later marriage records. Henry and Thomas were both married to wives called Mary, now Thomas was described as a labourer in the 1851 census, but obviously he and Henry would of married pre-1837, now I have their death ref numbers for 1853 and 1859, but other than that I dont know much more about them.

Benjamin are there any clues in the work they did? Could you find marriage records for any of them which would give their fathers' name(s)? nell

Hi Nell Just read your message and looked for possible baptisms on the IGI, thanks to their ages, and none fit their description. Henry was 70 born London and Thomas 56 born in Westminster, London, by 1851 if George was still alive, he'd of been about 60.

Benjamin Tricky - presumably they were born before civil registration. Perhaps you can find baptism records which will show they had the same parents - but if they aren't brothers, they might be cousins? nell

In 1845 my 4xgreat grandfather George Coomb's 1st son Matthew Coombs got married for the 2nd time in Paddington and was living down North Wharf Road, his new wife was living just round the corner, and she was a sister of Matthew's brother William's future wife. 4 years before in 1841 Matthew was living in Clerkenwell when his 1st wife was still alive. I checked the 1851 census returns for North Wharf road in Paddington and Matthew wasnt there, but there was a Thomas Coombs living down the same road but only as a lodger, and there was a Henry Coombs living in Dudley Place, at the end of the road. They are both the right age to be George's brothers as well. What are the chances they are connected to Matthew or could it just be coincidence there wer two families living down the same road. Any ideas please??
