I paid for 1837, but I am having trouble. I don't know any dates of births marriages or deaths, so other than search every single year, what can I use this site for??

Use the census returns in tandem with GRO to help you guesstimate some dates.

I tried to find a death of Isaac McKInley , (which I thought was an unusal name) between 1935 & 1945....& it gave me 45 pages to check !!! IT CAN"T BE SERIOUS !!!

The census is no use then! Forty five pages doesn't seem right. Have you got any ideas of the place where it happened?

well, in 1935 on his mothers death notice, he was living at Strathmore View, Harehills. He would have been about 50 then. But I don't think you can put in a place in the search can you ??

If you are searching 11 years, 1837 will give you at least 44 pages to search (4 qtrs per year). It doesn't mean that there will be an Isaac McKinley on each of these pages. It gives you the page where Isaac would come in alphabetical order if there happens to be one in that quarter. 1837online is really useful if you have a good idea of when an event took place and enables you to find the reference to allow you to order certificates, BUT it is very expensive if you don't really have an idea of date, and the cheaper option is to go to a library, or if you are abroad, go to a Latter Day Saints Family History centre and search the St. Catherine's Index for free). If you bought credits for this one search then you probably have wasted your money, but you can always do searches for other people if they have a good idea of the date of the event they are looking for and at least the money won't be completely wasted. I know this won't make you feel much better at the moment though!! Kath. x

I might do that after christmas....it would be better than wasting the credits going thru random pages. I bought 145 credits I think....silly me. I thought I would find all my ancestors B, M& D's after 1901.

Karen, You could always work through the 45 pages. I know you probably feel this is a waste of credits. But if you find him in the first few pages, then you won't have ot use all your credits, even if you do, at least you will have found him. I often use quite a few credits because I don't have an exact date of event, but it is cheaper than going down to london. I hate using microfiche. so local libraries are a definate no and if I find what I am looking for, then it is definately worth it.
