Hi, Have just discovered that one branch of my family tree is American. I cant afford full ancestry subs, so I wondered if anyone could help me. The name I have is Joseph Alfred Abbot b 1844 New Bedford, MA, he died in New Zealand 8 dec 1888. His daughter was Fanny Abbott b 1882, in New Zealand, I think. I'd love more info, particularly Joseph wife and any free or cheap sites that I could look at for more American info. Much appreciated!!

Thanks Pamela, You are right with Joseph and Mary, they are the correct family, however, I believe Joseph's father was definately a James Abbott, from others researching the family. I had one lead and checked the american census, but birthdates mean it could be right. I wondered if there was a family on the census in 1850 or 1860 with Joseph and a father James in New Hampshire?? Theres an american indian connection, believed to be Joseph's mother and apparently those researching this family are coming to this same dead end, but all believe that Josephs father was James..... Anyway, thank-you very much for your help and apologies for taking so long to post, busy with pre-christmas work!! Merry Christmas!

Sorry, should also have said that I think the MA from one source was a typo as all others say New Hampshire...very confusing as I know next to nothing about the American states!!
