I have a similar problem with my great aunt. Cannot trace her birth. Aged 4 on 1901 census with name Maude Gatward (in Liverpool, West Derby district) and when she married she was Barbara Gatward! I have tried searching for her under her mother's maiden name (Williams) and found a Barbara Williams of the right age. But her mother was married to someone else! Then I discovered that Maude/Barbara's parents (as shown in 1901) were not married until 1932! So maybe the mother was already married to someone else. So I am rather stuck. I give up and then revisit again every so often to see of I can discover something new. Keeps me busy!! Sue

I've had a longstanding problem trying to find my great aunt's birth. She's listed on the 1901 census as being less than a year old. Subsequent information on her marriage cert suggests her birth as being in 1904/1905. Her death was in 1975 and it lists her year of birth as being in 1903. I suspect she probably did lie about her age but regardless of that I cannot find her in the birth entries across several years. Her parents married in 1891, so I'm guessing that she wasn't registered but no idea why.

I have just found an uncle on 1837. It might be worth trying this if you are stuck. I had been trying to find him for ages, including using a lot of credits I was certain that he was born in 1940, but could not find him 10 years either side of that. Then as a last hope I looked under his mothers maiden name, even though there are two older children registered with their fathers name, for some reason he is the only one registered with his mothers name, I am assuming that there was some red tape during the war and as their parents weren’t married until later in 1940 he had to be registered with the mothers name. It might be worth a try if you are stuck
