In two places at once!

The amusing thing is that the wife's birth place differs on each occasion (the two places listed on this census are actually in the same parish) and strangely the children's ages are incorrect where listed as family members but correct where listed as visitors. However, they are definitely the same people!

Yes, I've found three different people recorded twice on the 1881 census. In each case they are with their family and also visiting somewhere else. Anne

I had a great aunt who was at home and also visiting in 1901. I once found a family who were on the 1881 twice - I seem to recall they had a shop - perhaps on a corner of two streets!

The censuses are supposed to record who was sleeping in the house on the night of the census. In 1901 I've got one great uncle safe in the bosom of his family and off for a dirty weekend with his girlfriend. I'm on the 1981 and 1991 censuses twice, when they asked both where you were and where you should be. Sadly they changed the rules for 2001. B

Hi Andy Don't forget in those days the enumerator had to write down all of the names in his area by hand. This could well have been an all day job. Perhaps they were visiting her father in the morning and then by the time the enumerator got round to her house she was back home cooking tea. Just a thought! Jeanette x

Maybe they had a row, she went off to dad's with the kids and hubby didn't want the neighbours to know!

Hi there! Just been taking advantage of the latest census updates on Ancestry and have noticed a strange anomaly with some of my rellies. I had already located all members of the Johnson family as being in Loftus in 1871, so it was with some surprise when I looked up the wife's father and found his daughter listed there as a visitor. Two of the wife's children are listed as grand-daughters as well. I haven't come across this before but I guess it's just a case of that she was out visiting her father, had taken two of her kids with her and so her husband had just said she was in when she wasn't.
