Hi, has anyone come across this? On my gg grparents marriage cert under father's name for the man, it has a woman's name, do I take this to mean that he was illegitimate & this woman was his mother? She has same surname as the bridegroom. best wishes Angie

I have a copy of a marriage certificate for 1911, where the bride's and 'father's' names are the same. The main part of the certificate was filled in by one person, with individual signatures. Luckily I was tracking the groom. Someone researching the bride's family, and closer related, tells me that James was the father of Janet, the bride. You can picture a busy parish office, vicar/clerk distracted, -who knows what might be written?

On my illegitimate gt grandmother's marriage cert in the father's column it says "illegitimate daughter of Susannah Barnes". Much more helpful than just putting a line through it! I know my gt grandmother Ruth was proud of this name because she gave it to her 3rd son as a middle name. nell
