An Olde Crone

An Olde Crone Report 19 Dec 2004 21:34

As Strachan is properly pronounced "Strawn" I should think the Grandmother is indeed Strachan and the Enumerator wrote down what he thought he heard which was Strong, with a Scottish accent!

Hi Gwynne That's one thing I hadn't thought of - Maureen Kingham found the Nunns for me on the 1861 and of course I was hoping that Ann would be on there but no :S But she could have been with a grandparent somewhere. Will have a look - the enumerator wasn't likely to have written wife's stepmother or stepmother-in-law was he:) Thanks for the idea. David

Guinevere Report 19 Dec 2004 08:02

Hi again, It's possible that Anna was born a Nunn and that the mother - in - law is her father's second wife. Anna may have married a Strachen before setting up home with Mr Carr. Hence no marriage. It may be worth looking for a Nun/Strachen marriage. Gwynne

Hi David, I'm looking at the original 1881 image and it definitely says Strong. Do you want me to save it for you? Gwynne

I have Ellen Harriet Carr born 20 Jan 1878 Netherland Place, Islington, daughter of Charles & Ann formerly Strachan. I have them on every census from 1871-1901. 1871 3 Cromer Street St Pancras Charles Carr hd 28 blacksmith St Pancras Ann wi 24 St Pancras Lizzey da 5 St Pancras Ann da 3 Clerkenwell Charles so 10 mos St Pancras 1881 10 Netherland Place, Islington Chas Carr hd 36 blacksmith Clerkenwell Anna wi 32 laundress St Lukes Elizabeth da 15 gen servant St Pancras Anne M da 13 “ “ St Pancras Chas so 10 Clerkenwell Wm Jas so 5 Islington Ellen H da 3 Islington Frdk E so 3 mos “ Ellen Strong grandmother 73 servant St Lukes 1891 5 North Avenue, Clerkenwell Charles Carr hd 47 carman St Pancras Anna wi 42 washerwoman St Lukes Elizabeth da 25 cigar maker St Pancras Charles so 20 head packer Clerkenwell William so 15 gen boy Islington Ellen da 13 “ Frederick so 10 “ Alice da 2 Clerkenwell Harriet Nunn mother in law/widow 57 St Pancras 1901 5 North Avenue, Islington Charles Carr hd 56 black lead grinder St Pancras Ann wi 50 charwoman St Lukes William J so 25 horse keeper Islington Alice R da 12 “ Edith A gd 8 “ But I can’t find anything on them before this – have searched 1837, BMD & IGI but no marriage!! I’ve looked from before the birth of the eldest child until 1878. It’s possible that they didn’t marry at all – Ellen claimed she was married on at least one child’s birth certificate before she actually was. I can’t find Ellen Strong (the “grandmother” on the 1881) on any other census – thought it might have been a mistranscription for Strachan but still no luck! I have Harriet Nunn (the mother-in-law on the 1891) and I can’t find a connection to Ann – Harriet was born Carr (!) in 1833 Pancras and married William Nunn in 1857 Pancras but she’s too young to be Charles’ mother. Any ideas? :)
