Born Where?

I cannot find much info on my great grandfather purely because I am not sure where he was born. He died when 36 and my granmother was 9 at the time. Her parents were divorced so she knows very little about his life. I have his marriage cert and death cert neither of which help me. Also his parents died when he was 3 and 5 and he was brought up by unmarried uncles who he did not contact after he left when a teenager. It would help if he had a nice obscure name but he doesn't, when i put his name in the 1901 census I get 300+ entries so can't go through them all... Any tips?

Carol What era are we looking at ? What was his name? what date did he die? With a few more details then maybe someone can see if they could do a look up for you. Karen

James Edmund (i think) Taylor born Oct 1899 I think (got married in Oct 1924 at age 24). Married in Hawes Parish Church. My gran believes he lived as a child with uncles in Windermere.

Is there 300+ entries when you put in James Taylor age 2-3

Actually, i have been searching JAMES TAYLOR 1 with 1year either side and it brings up 300. Also not helped as do not know his mothers name so i am not sure i will know when i have found him. Any other sources i can try?

Carol Any clues on potential first names of James' parents. You indicate they died when he was young. A potential name might help reduce the potential number of entries on a census search. Karen

Brain suffering a bit from hunger (need to get some lunch!) so may be barking up wrong tree (rather like that metaphor here!) but... Do you have enough info on any siblings to get a birth cert which could give you parent's names or other useful info? Christine

Well as parents died so young he was an only child. On the marriage certificate it says fathers name Edmund Taylor, profession Joiner. Now I did quite a wide search from 1901 census starting at age 22 - 30 and got 13 matches. However none seem helpful and none have just one son. My gran thinks her dads (James) mum was called Ann but is not sure. She also thinks for some reason that when he left his uncles he was running from something.
